If you ever want to succeed in life, you must learn to focus on your desires while taking your focus off of your pain. Pain is a natural part of progress, but if you focus on it, you will lose site of your dream.
Free Your Mind
Arnold Schwarzenegger is the most successful person I know who applies this principle to every facet of his life. He determines his definitions of success and then programs his mind to accept nothing less by focusing on it. If you've ever seen his movie Pumping Iron, he talks about being so focused on his dream that he even began to enjoy the pain of progress. He said, his workouts began to have the same pleasurable effects as an orgasm during sex.
I've never achieved quite that level of enlightenment, but following Arnold's example I was able to learn to enjoy the pain in my workouts as well.
Believe me, I know how crazy what I'm suggesting sounds. You have to remember that this mental transformation does not take place over night. It takes time and the willingness to be a bit uncomfortable to re-program your mind to the right ways of thinking
The Shortcut To Success
What I found most interesting about this process was that I reached my goals so much more quickly when I adopted this way of thinking.
Following in Arnold's footsteps, I started bodybuilding. When I first started, I didn't really like it. I worked a high-tempo job that drained me and often didn't even get to the gym until after 7PM.
After seeing limited results in terms of building strength and transforming my body, I decided to go hard. I committed to one month of going to the gym six days a week and using Arnold Schwarzenegger's workout plan.
After that month, I began to love going to the gym. I even enjoyed the pain of my workouts because my mind had begun to transform.
After six months, I had transformed my body more dramatically and built more strength than I had in the two years prior to this commitment.
All because I made up my mind to focus on what I wanted instead of focusing on how much it hurt to get there.
